James Chapman, who wrote extensively in the 1960’s about the early
symptoms of schizophrenia, commented; “What interests me about this
interview technique is its use of the well-known mechanism of projection. The
diagnosis of schizophrenia is based on detecting a whole series of signs and
symptoms. However, certain mental changes are subjectively experienced by
the young schizophrenic much before these signs and symptoms, such as
delusions and hallucinations, appear. This technique, because of its anatomical
and bodily content, and also because it is visual, allows the patient to describe,
by means of projection, some early changes in mental function and some
early symptoms, such as preoccupation with the body. It allows the observer to
examine the mental state and performance of the young schizophrenic in a
more detached fashion than a traditional interview. It is, therefore, possible
that this interview technique could well prove to be a very useful aid in the
early clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia”.

The SIS-Video has promising applications in the rapidly growing field of
telemedicine. This is particularly important for the evaluation and treatment of
Native Alaskans in isolated, geographically remote areas. The technology
employs state of the art still image phones between the Anchorage SIS center
and rural native hospitals. This technique is in line with the profession’s growing
recognition of the need to make state-of-the-art treatment technology available
to remote centers. Dr. Cassell’s procedure is in a format that will allow its utilization

The inkblot technique developed by Dr. Cassell has intriguing
potential. It derives from a recognition that we all entertain
complex images about our own bodies and that our style of
behavior in the world is affected by these images. There is
already solid evidence that the formless context of the inkblot
is particularly effective in eliciting our unconscious body feelings
and fantasies. Dr. Cassell has boldly tackled the problem of
constructing an inkblot series that will maximize the projection
of body imagery in general and also feelings about specific
sectors of one’s body. He has made excellent progress in
exploring the applications of his inkblot series and we may
